Nightlife in Playa del Inglés: Where Gran Canaria Comes Out to Play
From sunset cocktails and live rock to drag queens, dance floor grooves until dawn - Playa del Inglés rarely settles down for an early night.
Don't commit to one venue too early. Start with a west facing bar terrace , order a cocktail and bask in one of Gran Canaria's glorious sunset. Soul quenched, head to Yumbo or Kasbah after 9pm. Still going strong? Clubs really get going after midnight.
Playa del Inglés has been partying for decades, and it shows no obvious signs of requesting the bill.
By day, this sprawling southern Gran Canaria resort is all beaches, sunbeds and suspiciously early first beers. Come evening, however, the flip-flops are swapped for something marginally smarter and attention shifts inland.
The nightlife isn't confined to one strip. The Yumbo Centre is the colourful heart of the LGBTQ+ scene, while the Kasbah and surrounding streets offer pubs, music bars and late-night venues. Playa del Inglés nightlife rewards wandering.
And therein lies the appeal. You can start with a civilised cocktail, watch a show, catch some live music and finish dancing somewhere at an hour when sensible people are contemplating breakfast.
All in one - drinks, dinner and a show
For something rather more theatrical than another round at the bar, MHT (Music Hall Tavern) deserves a place on any itinerary. It's a full-scale comedy drag dinner show featuring drag performers, singers and dancers rather than simply a conventional nightclub.
The show itself takes place outside Playa del Inglés, but transport inclusive tickets are available from selected southern resorts pick-up points including Playa del Inglés. In other words, it works perfectly well as a Playa del Inglés night out – just one requiring a short excursion.
Yumbo Centre - the rainbow-coloured heart
You haven't really experienced Playa del Inglés after dark until you've wandered into the Yumbo Centre.
A fairly ordinary-looking shopping centre by daylight transforms after sunset into one of Europe's best-known LGBTQ+ nightlife hubs. Packed with bars and clubs and all within easy walking distance.
For cabaret, Ricky's Cabaret Bar is an established choice, while Sparkles mixes live entertainment with a sociable holiday atmosphere.
Cocktails rather than cabaret? Eiffel Bar offers a more intimate option, while Blue Havana Lounge Bar is another easy-going Yumbo stop.
Then, when midnight somehow becomes 2am, there's always another doorway glowing invitingly.
Kasbah – turn up the music
The Kasbah area represents another side of Playa del Inglés nightlife. Less cabaret, more music, dancing and that peculiar holiday phenomenon whereby someone who hasn't visited a nightclub since 2007 suddenly decides tonight is the night.
You’ll find positive reviews about the rock/metal sounds coming out of Relax Rock Pub while nearby RockBar MELODIES cosy setting for rock and roll vibes and sports on TV. For Latin rhythms, Salsa Bar Mojito Sur adds DJ curated Latin sounds and cocktails to the equation.
Something quieter?
Not every Playa del Inglés evening needs to end with ringing ears.
Atelier Cocktail Bar is a polished choice when you'd rather discuss the evening than shout it into somebody's ear. A great spot to linger over glorious sunsets, it’s rooftop location gets your evening-off to a magical start. Iguazú Lounge is another sophisticated bet for cocktails and conversation amid stylish vintage surroundings. For the familiar comforts of an Irish pub, Mulligan´s Irish Pub offers those dependable combinations of drinks, live sport, food and banter.
Nightlife for everyone
That's ultimately what Playa del Inglés does so well. You don't need to be 22, wearing sequins or capable of dancing until sunrise.
There are couples lingering over cocktails, groups watching cabaret, rock fans nursing cold beers, LGBTQ+ travellers bouncing between Yumbo bars and holidaymakers who merely popped out for ‘just one’ several hours previously - a place where ‘out’ and ‘out, out’ takes on several glorious meanings.
Playa del Inglés Nightlife is lively, international, occasionally magnificently tacky and rarely dull. Just don't make ambitious plans for 8am the following morning.
