23/4/26 Thursday early lunch We 3 middle aged guys from London had seen this interesting out-of-the-way restaurant on previous visits but it was either not open on those days or fully booked. This time we booked the Wednesday evening before for the start of Thursday lunch at 12:30. The boss (turned out to be Gustavo) happily wrote us into his diary. The clientele was casual & of mixed ages on Wednesday evening. We arrived on time to find a few people already settled early at the best view shoreside tables & all the tables reserved. We took the last shoreside table. A couple with two babies was next to us. Gustavo confirmed it was us booked in & we ordered a variety of rations & a good bottle of wine. We visited the kitchen to choose the fish by weight (on an electronic hanging scale) choosing a red and black 'viejas' (€28/kg) fish of a half kilo each 'viejas' to share. The big brown speckled fish looked a lot less fresh (dull eyes) and were possibly the cheaper €25/kg option. The wine was a respectable mainland white (Martin Codax - Alboriño 20) which arrived quickly, poured into large glasses by the boss himself. It was very good (It was £19 online in the UK, no doubt £60+ in a restaurant. The bread (.5 each), small fish broth (2), generous mixed salad (6), alioli (1), numerous papas arrugadas (4) & 1/2 rations (6) of squid rings, green lipped mussels & sardines came quickly & were generous & cooked nicely. The sardinas & calamares were piping hot, very tasty & crispy accompanied by the red & green mojo (included). The hot 'starters' all went down well, so by the time the two fish came (without garnish, probably just as well) there was little left apart from some mojo, salad & packets of crushed dried bread (which really ought to be discarded as likely brought out to every table). The fish were delivered by the chef who explained one was male (red) & the other female. They were nicely cooked, tender & delicious (we didn't eat the skin or heads though). During our stay another tourist young family came & went. A local had his lunch & 2 English couples ate. All seemed happy. The restaurant was not more than a quarter full, the reserved tables further back from the shore still empty. We finished by 2pm & caught the boss' eye to ask for the bill. We were very happy as it came printed as an accurate €79.50 so I added a (turned out to be generous) 10% tip rounding it up to €88. As we don't carry cash we paid by phone. As the boss he got it all anyway & seemed very happy. We left happy & sated, saying goodbye to the waitress & chef (which they & Gustavo appreciated) in the kitchen which seemed bigger than the dining area. The toilets were at the rear of the kitchen, accessible via the road/pavement. Time to wash our hands and fishy fingernails (a finger bowl would have been useful).
We missed out on booking this little restaurant on our first trip so we’re keen for our hotel to secure a booking for us and we were extremely happy with our experience. The staff are welcoming the menu is in Spanish I would recommend you look up what you want on translate, although the staff are very helpful in recommending and showing off the fresh produce. Also they can advise you on if you’ve ordered enough! We had side salad, potatoes, muscles then tuna (we did order a portion of calamari however when the substantial portions of tuna came we realised we didn’t need it and the waiter even suggested we wait. Excellent advice rather than paying for food we couldn’t eat.. we finished with lemon mouse, light and fluffy and a cheesecake delicious and not too heavy. We’d a great bottle of white wine to complete. My only wish would have been a coffee to finish but it did not detract from our evening, book ahead it’s worth it if you’re a seafood lover.
Firstly, it is highly recommended that you make a reservation. If you go without one, it's highly unlikely that you'll get a table. The waiters were amazing, even though the restaurant was full. The food was of the highest quality and everything was fresh.
