Description
Explore the old town district of Vegueta in Las Palmas, a historic settlement founded in 1478 by Castilian troops.
The tour begins near Guiniguada Theater (Tasca Bar Picadita) and explores the quarter’s links to Atlantic maritime navigation. Vegueta is currently under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status and features many notable sights.
Walk along cobblestone streets, passing close to the Cathedral of Santa Ana, a significant monument of Canarian architecture. Behind the cathedral is Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, once a gathering place where local women collected water from a central well.
Admire the balconies of traditional noble houses as you head toward Plaza de San Antonio Abad. In front is the Casa Museo de Colón (admission not included), dedicated to the history of Christopher Columbus and the European discovery of the Americas. This is the most visited museum in the Canaries. At the end of the tour, the guide can provide information and assist with ticket purchases.
